Big Ideas:

1.) RECYCLING
Recycling(fact sheet)
Recycled Art Sculpture (video clip)
Styrofoam Sculpture Lesson Plan
-Students learn about how the earth's resources are limited. By creating a sculpture from materials that already surved their purpose and were discarded, students will be more cautious of their consumption.

2.) CURRENT ISSUES
Guerrilla Art Action (video clip)
Guerrilla Girls (video clip)
-Activitst students take it upon themselves to spread knowledge and awareness of imporant issues.

3.) POWER
Daily Life and Media
-Talk about how the struggle for power arises in every culture, race, gender, and species. The lesson would focus on a single issue for each student. They would portray the most dominant players in the struggle according to them.

4.) SELF PORTRAIT/BUST PROJECT
Clay 3-D Lesson
-Working with clay, students will create a full size bust of themself as who they wish to become or what they hope to become in their adult life.

5.) FAMILY HISTORY/ TIMELINE
Altered Books- The International Society of Altered Book Artists
-The students will make a self-portrait of their life as a book. They can show where they came from, who they are, and then what they will go on to do, or simply a favorite chapter of their life. Another possible idea would be to do a family history or timeline of important events. This website should give the students background information about the project and show them what could be included in an altered book.

6.) WORLD PEACE freedom, tolerance, violence, war
Pinwheels for Peace
-This project will teach the students about current issues and allow them to express their own feelings about what is going on around them. They will hopefully all be different and individual to the student who created it.

7.) GOING GREEN
Earth Friendly Architecture
-Students would have to research new eco-friendly technologies that are becoming part of architecutral layouts. The final project would be for the students to design the most "green" structure.

8.) IMAGINARY SETTINGS
Giovanni Battista Piranesi
-This exhibit is about imaginary places and designs. Students would be assigned to think imaginatively and create an impossible place.

9.) ART IN THE COMMUNITY
Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller Exhibit at Carnegie Museum
Opera for a Small Room
-Museum exhibits like this could spark an idea to create a classroom project. It would be interesting to have the students look at this example and then create an environment as a group with certain qualities and restrictions.

10.) MANIPULATION OF MATERIAL
Working with Clay
-I would have the students experiment with the clay medium simply manipulating it as they please. The assignment would then go into the techniques of working with clay and the tools associated with it.
